In Alexandria, Demetrius of Phaleron was the
librarian of
Ptolemy II Philadelphus (285-246 BC); he wanted
copies of
the Jewish
Law for the Library of Alexandria. Such is perhaps
the beginning of a Greek translation of the Torah.
Historians
do know that the compilation of a full translation
of the Torah
was made in the early 3rd century BC.
