At His crucifixion on Calvary, Jesus gave His mother
Mary to His apostle
John’s care. That would have been a gross injustice and
insensitivity to
other children--blood brothers and sisters--had they
existed. Semitic custom
would have dictated that to give His Mother’s care
outside the immediate
family to have been highly unlikely. In effect what
Jesus asked John to do
was to be Mary’s son after He died! How unusual is that
had there been
other sons?
